Depression, anxiety and stress

One in three adults in the United Kingdom will suffer from psychological problems at some point in their lives and one in four will suffer from depression.

Depression is a potentially serious condition that can take all of the joy out of daily living, and in some cases even lead to suicide.  When one is feeling low it is difficult to be positive, and life can sometimes seem hopeless. It is not just a ‘down’ mood, something that one could ‘snap out of’, but a medical condition, from which it is possible to recover with the correct help.

Anxiety can be a symptom of depression but can also exist as a problem in its own right. It is an unpleasant emotional state with qualities of apprehension, dread, distress and uneasiness; it is distinguishable from fear as it is often nameless.  Anxiety can appear and disrupt daily lives in the form of nervousness, lack of confidence, panic attacks and some phobias.

Everyone experiences tensions as they go through life, but particularly difficult situations, or prolonged periods of pressure, at home or at work can cause a build up, and the resulting stress can become a major problem. The symptoms of stress include – disturbed sleep, irritability, tiredness, low mood, headaches, indigestion and skin problems to mention just a few. These unpleasant side-effects of stress, if not dealt with, can lead to physical illness and mental breakdown.

All of these conditions are treatable, and with the right therapeutic approach can be overcome, allowing the sufferer to enjoy their life again. Many people suffer depression, anxiety and stress needlessly for years, as they often do not appreciate that what they are suffering from is a medical condition, or realise that help is available. At Progress Counselling we offer a range of treatments, and in some cases change and improvement can be rapid. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Counselling, and Hypnosis can all help on a individual basis, and groups are run in assertiveness skills and stress, anger and anxiety management. We always work with GPs and Psychiatrists if a client requires medical supervision, and our qualified assessment will show if this is necessary.
